The Derby Telegraph Sports Awards can be entered by both disabled and non-disabled people, athletes and teams across all categories. As all the District Award entries are being run through the central nomination system for 2017, please see below the category descriptions for the main bulk of awards. Any District Specific categories have been stated at the bottom of the page.

There are certain individuals whose sustained contribution to Derbyshire sport over many years merits special recognition. This award celebrates a truly special sportsperson who has made a lasting impact on the region through their phenomenal career in sport.

The Sportsman of the Year Award celebrates the Derbyshire player in any sport that has most impressed this year. Quite simply recognising the best of the best, this award goes to an outstanding individual that the whole of Derby can be proud of!

The Team of the Year Award is for Derbyshire’s best team. Demonstrating amazing sporting ability and embodying the true spirit of team-work, this award is for the team that have put in the most inspirational performances of the year.

This award recognises an individual who gives up so much of their own time to provide the county with their help and support in any sport and physical activity discipline. An inspirational individual and example of true dedication, the winner of this award will be involved in helping to engage others in sport and physical activity, as well as being a valuable part of any community.

This award celebrates the manager or coach who has made a significant contribution to the success of their team or club over the past 12 months. Their hard work and dedication is recognised in this category and the winner will be celebrated for their contribution to their chosen sport.

A qualified coach or manager (paid/unpaid) who has made a major contribution to the lives of people through their coaching or managing will be eligible to enter this award.

A member of school staff who have gone beyond their day-to-day commitments – to support either PE, School Sport or Physical activity within their school over a period of time, or for innovative work they have set up over the last year.

This award will be awarded to the most outstanding young disabled athlete, who has great talent, and has demonstrated motivation and determination to succeed in their sport.

This award celebrates the region’s very best junior sportsperson who competes as an amateur, recognising their incredible achievements made within their discipline over the past year. A simply outstanding individual, the award is a way to reward such inspirational success from a grassroots level.

All applicants must be aged under 12 years of age on or before 22nd September 2017

This award will be presented to the most outstanding disabled sports team of any age and gender, who can evidence sporting achievement and demonstrate motivation and determination to succeed in their sport. We will consider Teams in any recognised sport, who have displayed an outstanding achievement at district, county, regional, national or international level.

Sporting ability and success, true spirit of team-work, overcoming adversity and inspiring others are all attributes that will be considered for this award. This award celebrates the very best of High Peaks Disability Sport’s Teams. Subsections of an overall team will not be eligible. As part of the assessment we will also consider where Teams have helped promote access and participation in sport and physical activity within the High Peak area.

Awarded to an Infant, Primary or Secondary School in the SSP in recognition of outstanding achievement in PE, sport or physical activity. The award will recognise & celebrate the sporting success of our local schools. This could be for example for:-

Sporting success through competition

A project or programme which demonstrates impact in engaging more young people in sport, physical activity and healthy lifestyles

Creating stronger links with their local community to extend sporting opportunities for all.

- Display board
